The name "Claude" isn't just a reference to Claude Shannon. There was another Claude — a beloved albino alligator who lived at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. When Anthropic discovered they shared a name with this rare white gator, they became instant fans. Claude the alligator became an unofficial mascot, with plushies on desks and gator emojis in Slack chats. Sadly, Claude passed away in December 2025 at the age of 30.
